World Split, the crisis in Venezuela A war of Ideology

2019 Feb 02, Kathmandu. The crisis in Venezuela is a hot talk around the world right now. Even the country such a Nepal with very little power to have some say in the matter is in the puddle. The statement by one of the leaders of the Communist Party of Nepal (United) has helped in sparking of new debates in the matter. With sides globally and within the nation. It’s no less than a verbal world war.

United States and Venezuela

The relationship between United States and Venezuela began degrading after the change in government when Socialist president Hugo Chavez got elected in 1999. Though many efforts were made to reestablish ties during Obama period the situation kept becoming loosen every year, and now both countries share no formal diplomatic ties, the reason for this is the United States supporting Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president denying recognition to Nicolás Maduro who became president just few weeks before Juan Guaidó sworn himself as the interim president. The tweet by The United states President Donald J. Trump recognizing Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president came out to be the biggest blunder for the Nicolás Maduro . Now the world seems divided where the superpowers of the world have taken different stances as to who is legitimate. USA has always denied recognition to socialist leaders stating their regime have and would weaken the economy of the country and is the reason behind the downfall of Venezuela.

World and Venezuela

Looking at who supports and who denies which leaders, the clear pattern can be seen where countries who are and have had close ties with communism are in support of Maduro and democratic countries led by the United States are supporting Guaidó. Some countries like, Russia, Cuba, have shown their support to Maduro and even China, though directly not supporting any leaders is still backing up who is in more power in Venezuela because of its long term investment in the fuel. Countries led by the USA, such as Australia, Brazil, Austria, Britain, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, and 12 Latin American Countries are in support of
Guaidó .  As for the other major organizations such as the UN, they have spoken in favor of taking a neutral stance for the time being. This world split seems based on ideology, business and as a way for global powers to establish their authority. The balance of power seems very unequal though, as
Guaidó have more powerful nations in his support, the situation however for the people of Venezuela doesn’t look bright. More tension may result in a very devastating civil movement in the country which needs to be taken very seriously.

Nepal, America and Venezuela

The ripple of the diplomatic crisis between United States and Venezuela seems to have affected Nepal as well. Puspakamal Dahal, a leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (United), have spoken in the favor of Maduro and strongly condemned the involvement and interference of United States in the matter of a sovereign country. This statement of his however has created other small ripples within the nation as well as abroad, which again have created sides. Though the Prime Minister K.P Oli in the meeting with US envoy Randy Berry, has clarified that the words spoken by any leaders of the party wouldn’t be of the whole government, it is their own words and the government isn’t responsible for them, United States seems to be wary of the situation. In other hand Nepali congress as the major opposition and Democratic Party has openly supported the United States. The war of ideologies seems to have affected this small nation as well.

It is not new for a strong and powerful country with support of other major powers to establish hegemony upon small nations who try to deny their power. For a nation such as Nepal with a very weak economic and military strength, it is always important to establish a neutral stance when it comes to the situations such as this. Poking into the nest of hornet is never a good idea.
